Basketball Sweeps Chilton County on Senior Night
WETUMPKA, Ala. - Wetumpka boys and girls basketball completed a sweep of senior night against Chilton County on Tuesday.
The ladies dominated the Tigers, 69-37, while the men managed a 62-51 victory. The boys team battled in the second half, outscoring Chilton County 39-23 in the final 16 minutes. The boys now hold a four game winning streak and have accomplished an undefeated record at home for the regular season.
For the women, the Coach Harriet Winchester led team mounted a dominant showing for a third consecutive win. Queen Ballard's 22 points and 28 rebounds was the most on the team in both categories. The showing for the senior marked 1,000 career points.
"We changed the lineup." Winchester said. "We allowed the seniors to get their runs in, the other thing we focused on was increasing our defense intensity."
While it was never in doubt for the women, the men had some difficulties in the early stages of play. The Indians trailed 28-23 heading into the second half of play. The third quarter seemingly clicked for the black and gold though, as they outscored the Tigers 21-15 during the period. Like Queen Ballard, Senior Andrew Voyles also reached the 1,000 points mark, a feat that has not been reached since Nate Rogers in 2023.
"All the hard work paid off." Voyles said. "All the extra hours I shot, I've been in the gym at 5am putting that work in." Voyles said. Voyles ended the night with 13 Points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Along with Voyles, Chris Robinson and Kaleb Ballard both shined. The duo finished with 12 and 20 points, respectively. Both had double-double performances as well. Robinson closed the night with 10 assists while Ballard earned 14 rebounds.
The Indians now have just one more game before the 6A Area 4 Tournament tips off.
"We're making sure we're focused, making sure were locking in, tuning up the little things, so we're not going in cold." head coach Steven Thomas said. "Starting off stronger in the 1st quarter, tweaking the little things, like us hitting shots, being in defensive positions, knowing the rotations, and just making sure those are tuned up, ready to go."
Wetumpka takes on PCA on Jan. 30 in Prattville. Tipoff will be at 5:30 p.m. for the girls game, with the boys immediately following. Fans can listen on 105.1 WRFS, The Wetumpka Sports Network Facebook and Wetumpka High Athletics Live on YouTube.
