Men's Basketball Clinches Bid to Host Area Tournament
WETUMPKA, Ala. - Wetumpka boy's basketball has officially clinched the top seed in the 6A Area 4 Tournament and will be the host team. It is the first time Wetumpka has been the tournament host since the 2020-21 season.
Currently with a 3-0 area record, the Indians are still set to play Percy Julian for a second time on Thursday night, but following a buzzer-beater Stanhope Elmore win over the Phoenix on Tuesday night, Percy Julian now holds a 1-2 record with Stanhope Elmore completing its area games with a 1-3 finish.
With three teams in the area, holding the top seed includes earning a bye directly into the area championship game. A win in that game on February 9 would provide Wetumpka with a 6A playoff bid for the second consecutive season.
So far in area play, the Indians have knocked off Percy Julian once, 57-52, in the first game of the new year. The Indians immediately followed up that performance with a win over Stanhope Elmore on the road, 60-53. Last week, Wetumpka earned a dominant victory in the rematch with the Mustangs, 66-28.
The boy's 6A Area 4 tournament will begin at the Wetumpka Competition Gym on February 6, with Stanhope Elmore playing Percy Julian for the third time this season. The winner will take on Wetumpka on February 9. The area championship game will be broadcast on The Wetumpka Sports Network facebook, 105.1 WRFS and Wetumpka High Athletics Live on YouTube.
