Bio
Steven Thomas enters his fourth season as Wetumpka’s head boy’s basketball coach. He returns following a historic Area championship season that included the teams first AHSAA Tournament win since 2013.
Thomas’ first season with the Indians was a bumpy road, highlighted by a buzzer-beater jump shot from Demarcus Peake in overtime to win his first career Area game as the Indians’ head coach.
The first two years with the Indians featured multi-sport athlete Nate Rogers. Now a UAB quarterback, Rogers was the first player under Coach Thomas to achieve 1,000 career points or more, reaching that milestone in his junior season.
Last season, the Indians finished 21-6. It was the first time since 2013 that the team finished with 20 or more wins. Wetumpka struggled in area play, going 1-3.
Despite this, Thomas’ team rallied to win the area tournament over Stanhope and Percy Julian. The win over the Phoenix came by just one point, 50-49, marking the team’s first area title since the 2020-21 season.
