Wetumpka Athletics Announces Girl's Flag Football Program and Schedule
WETUMPKA, Ala. - Wetumpka High School announced the addition of Girl's Flag Football to its athletic programs on Tuesday.
Since the inaugural season of girl's flag football within the AHSAA in 2021, the sport has quickly picked up steam across the state. Wetumpka is the first school in Elmore County to start a program for it.
The team will be led by head coach Andy Maxwell. Maxwell has 34 years of coaching experience in the state of Georgia. Over the last three years he has led Sequoyah High School (Ga.). During his tenure he expanded the Chiefs flag football program to include JV and Middle School teams.
Candice Lacey will serve as an assistant coach for the Indians. She enters her third year working with the school, and will continue her work as the head coach of the Girl's Track & Field team.
A schedule was included in the announcement. The team's first game will be Aug. 26 at Prattville High School. The Indians also have scheduled road-trips to 2024 6A/7A semifinalist Auburn and back-to-back defending 6A/7A State champions Central Phenix City.
The first ever home girl's flag football game will take place on Oct. 14 at the Wetumpka Sports Complex as Wetumpka takes on Brewbaker Tech.
Tryouts for the team will take place Aug. 7-8 at the WHS Football Practice Field from 6-7:30 p.m. All students grades 7-12 are invited to try out. Students must have an updated physical and be enrolled in the Wetumpka School System (WHS, WMS, RMS).
