Team Black wins annual Black and Gold Game 20-13
WETUMPKA, Ala.- Wetumpka kicked off its football season with the Meet the Indians game on Friday night. Team Black won by 20-13 score.
Due to lightning in the area, the scrimmage's kickoff was delayed from 6:00 p.m. until 6:45 p.m. Severe weather also saw the cancellation of many of the pregame festivities, including "Meet the Indians" and performances from the Pride of the Tribe marching band and the Wetumpka Cheerleaders.
The weather didn't dampen the spirits of Head Coach Bear Woods, who championed his players for staying "locked in" during the weather delay.
"One of our sayings here is that champions don't care about the weather," said Woods. "Meaning that we expect things to happen, adversity, and we're going to respond positively."
Much of the offensive production came from the pair of Jordans, with sophomores Jordan Smoke and Jordan Hill both scoring two touchdowns apiece.
Hill, playing on the gold team, broke off two touchdown runs of 65+ yards on his first two touches of the game.
Coach Woods praised not only Hill's athletic ability, but his character off the field as well.
"What helps your program win is that [Hill] is such a great teammate," said Woods. "He's a humble guy, he gives effort, he has the attitude, he's reliable, and he's tough, both mentally and physically. He's a player that has heart, and that's what I'm excited about."
Coach Woods and the Indians will focus on next week's season-opening matchup against Beauregard.
"We are all in," said Woods. "We are ready to put all this hard work on the field and go compete. Tonight was a big night of competition to determine who our starters are."
The Indians' season will begin Aug. 22 at Beauregard, followed by the home opener against Chelsea on Aug. 29.
