Former Indian Trey Jones III Signs to CFL
Class of 2019 Graduate signs with the Montreal Alouettes
WETUMPKA, Ala. - Former Wetumpka Indians defensive back Trey Jones III signed with the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes on Tuesday. He is the first former Indian to sign a professional football contract since 2001. He will play on a two-year contract.
A graduate in the class of 2019, Jones was a member of the Indians historic 2017 6A state runner-up team. In 2018, Jones earned all-metro and all-county honors en route to a semifinal appearance during his senior campaign. While on the varsity roster, the Indians posted a record of 32-8 over three seasons. Jones also played baseball, making the AHSAA 6A Playoffs in 2018 and 2019.
After graduation, Jones signed to continue his career at the Division I level with Central Michigan. Under head coach Jim McElwain, Jones was a crucial asset in the 2021 season. The Chippewas posted a 9-4 record that ended in a win over Washington State in the Sun Bowl, where Jones posted three tackles. He went on to be listed with All-MAC honors following the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
Jones played his final season at Texas A&M, making appearances in 11 games. He recorded five tackles in the team's season opener against Notre Dame in 2024. The Aggies finished that season 8-5 with an appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl against USC.
After a year away from football, Jones now has earned his first chance at the professional level. The connection between Wetumpka and Montreal is not a recent development though. Indians athletic director Bear Woods was a member of the Alouettes from 2011-16, where he was named a CFL All-Star twice. Woods also earned the James P. McAffery Trophy, awarded to the league's most outstanding defensive player each season, two times.
The Alouettes came up just short of a title last season, falling to Saskatchewan in the 112th Grey Cup. Montreal and Trey Jones III will kick off the 2026 season with the preseason in May, and the regular season opener against the Hamilton TigerCats on Thursday, June 4.
