Wetumpka Legend Jamie Winborn Named to Vanderbilt Hall of Fame
WETUMPKA, Ala. - Wetumpka football's Jamie Winborn will have his storied career forever enshrined in Nashville, Tennessee thanks to his selection into the Vanderbilt Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2025.
Winborn played for the Indians under head coach John Maddaloni from 1993-96. With the Indians, Winborn and his teammates achieved an impressive 35-13 record over those four years. In 1995, he and the Indians posted a 13-1 record and made it to the 5A State Semifinals. That season is still tied for the most wins in a single season for Wetumpka (2017, 13-2). In Winborn's senior season, he was named to the 5A All-State team and participated in the 1996 Alabama vs. Mississippi All-Star Game.
"I'm so proud not just for me but really for my city," Winborn said. "I want to let kids and people know that excellence is doable, not just at that university but anywhere you go."
With an impressive career at Vanderbilt, Winborn earned All-SEC selections in multiple seasons, being honored as second team All-SEC and All-Freshman honors in his debut season. He later had first team All-SEC honors in both 1999 and 2000. He is still the all-time and single-season leader in tackles for loss. Winborn was also selected as the Vanderbilt representative of the 2023 SEC Legends class.
In 2001, the San Francisco 49ers selected Winborn in the second round of the NFL Draft. He is the former Wetumpka player to compete in the NFL. Spending time with the 49ers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans, he played an impressive 10 seasons at the professional level until retiring in 2010.
Now, Winborn often supports Wetumpka High School and its athletic programs. He spoke to the WHS student body in February 2024, and avidly shows his support of Wetumpka Athletics through social media.
Winborn's impact remains felt in the halls of Wetumpka High School, and now will be immortalized in the halls of Vanderbilt University as well. He will be officially recognized at the induction ceremony at Vanderbilt's Student Life Center on February 2026.
