Wetumpka Falls in Playoff Clash at Saraland
SARALAND, Ala. - The Wetumpka Indian (6-5, 3-3 6A Region 2) wrapped up its 2025 season after a loss to the Saraland Spartans (10-0, 8-0 6A Region 1) 49-24 on Friday night at Spartans Stadium.
Entering as the underdog, the Indians came out swinging, with a touchdown-scoring drive to open the game. The Indians scored off a trick-play 38-yard pass from running back Jordan Hill to John Hudson Wingard. The senior tight end finished the night with two touchdowns and 120 receiving yards.
The Indians continued the hot start by forcing a three and out, and subsequently drilling a 44-yard field goal off the foot of Cyrus Bullock. The sophomore earned a new career long, and secured the longest made kick for Wetumpka since Logan Weighall in 2022 (49 yards).
Saraland found its legs, and managed to put up 49 unanswered points to take a huge lead 49-10 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Indians showed their heart though, outscoring the Spartans in the final 12 minutes. The Indians would close out the season with a 49-24 loss.
Charlie Skipper battled with a warrior's spirit in the loss. Despite taking multiple hits, the sophomore quarterback accounted for 224 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Walt Myrick stood out for the Indians. In his final time putting on a Wetumpka uniform, the linebacker made 11 tackles including one sack. LT Davis wasn't far behind, with 10 tackes of his own.
The Indians close out year four of the Bear Woods era with a 6-5 record, and a fourth consecutive playoff appearance. Coach Woods is the only coach in school history to make the postseason in each of his first four years. With a young roster, the Indians will look to build off of the success this season and carry it into 2026.
