Indians Defense Shines in 23-7 Win over Demopolis
The Wetumpka Indians (6-4, 3-3 6A Region 2) earned a win in the regular season finale during senior night on Thursday over Demopolis (6-4, 5-1 5A Region 3).
After a back-and-forth battle on defense in the first quarter, Senior Tight End John Hudson Wingard put the Indians up by seven after a 46-yard touchdown grab by way of QB Charlie Skipper.
The Indians defense impressed all night, forcing four turnovers and holding Demopolis to 218 yards of total offense throughout the game.
Cornerback Bobo Browning snagged his first interception of the night with just under a minute and a half to go in the first quarter, setting up the offense inside Demopolis' redzone. Kaleb Ballard hauled in the Indians second touchdown of the night, and after a failed two point conversion the Indians led 13-0 heading into the lockeroom for halftime.
Late in the third quarter, Bobo Browning incercepted another pass and brought it back to the house for a 34-yard pick six. He finished the night with 8 tackles, 3 pass break ups, and two interceptions.
LT Davis and Emerson Paulk both grabbed an interception of their own, rounding out a four takeaway night for Wetumpka.
After a two yard touchdown run from Tigers' running back Carlow Jones made it 20-7, the Indians offense marched down the field with a drive that culminated in a 40-yard-field goal by way of Cyrus Bullock.
Elex Smeland handled extra-point duties, and remained perfect on the season knocking in both of his attempts.
The Indians look ahead to next week, where they will take on the Saraland Spartans in round one of the AHSAA 6A Playoffs on Nov. 7.
