Wetumpka Suffers Loss to Russell County
SEALE, Ala. - The Wetumpka Indians (1-2, 0-1 6A Region 2) lost the first region matchup of the year against the Russell County Warriors (2-1, 1-0 6A Region 2) on Friday night 31-18.
Deion Floyd had a strong night for returning punts for the Indians. The junior accounted for 177 total return yards, including two punt returns of over 50 yards.
After giving up an early score, the Wetumpka defense held strong for most of the first half. Before going to the locker room, Safety Emerson Paulk Jr. picked off a Russell County pass and set up the Indians offense with the ball on the opposing goalline.
Fullback JD Denmark was able to punch in that score. Denmark subsequently recovered an onside kick for Wetumpka as well.
Wetumpka went into the locker room down 17-15, and later trailed 25-15. Cyrus Bullock knocked in a field goal from 29 yards to cut it to a one score game.
The defense managed to get the stop it needed, aand Wetumpka had a shot at it with three minutes to play. After reaching Russell County territory, The Indians were stopped on fourth down after a Charlie Skipper was hit as he threw, leading to a pick six that gave up a game-sealing touchdown.
The Indians now return home and set their sights on Pike Road. Kickoff at the Wetumpka Sports Complex will be at 7 pm on Sept. 12. The game will be broadcast on The Wetumpka Sports Network YouTube, Facebook and 105.1 WRFS.
