Wetumpka Comeback Cut Short Against Chelsea
WETUMPKA, Ala. - The Wetumpka Indians (1-1, 0-0 6A Region 4) lost to the Chelsea Hornets (2-0, 6A Region 3) in the Indians' home opener 40-30 on Friday night.
Chelsea quickly took a 20-0 lead over the Indians early in the second quarter. The Indians went into the locker room at halftime still down three scores 20-3. Kicker Cyrus Bullock once again impressed with a new best 39-yard field goal.
A motivated Wetumpka team came out of the break ready to get back in the game. A nine-yard touchdown pass to Christian Wilkes was the first trip to the endzone of the night for the black and gold.
Chelsea did answer with a touchdown, but Wetumpka then scored back-to-back touchdowns to cut Chelsea's lead to 27-23 early in the fourth quarter. A Chelsea fumble gave Wetumpka the ball in Hornet territory with a chance to take the lead, but the Indians late momentum was not enough. Chelsea forced a turnover and managed to keep the lead to beat Wetumpka 40-30.
The Indians outscored Chelsea 30-20 in the second half. The team has outscored its first two opponents in the second half by a combined 44-20 this season.
Charlie Skipper closed out his first start at home with 275 yards, three passing touchdowns and one rushing score. Kaleb Ballard gets credit for one of those after a 48-yard reception. The Sophomore has scored a touchdown in both games so far.
Jordan Hill was efficient recieving and rushing. He finished the night with 100 recieving yards, another 36 on the ground and a touchdown.
Leading the charge defensively was once again Walt Myrick. Posting 15 tackles he barely had more than Javian Greene. The Sophomore defensive back had 11 tackles and a fumble recovery.
