Wetumpka Beats Beauregard in Season Opener
OPELIKA, Ala. - The Wetumpka Indians (1-0) earned a season opening win over the Beauregard Hornets (0-1) in Opelika on Friday night 36-19.
The Indians outscored Beauregard 15-0 in the second half to get the victory. Quarterback Charlie Skipper tallied two touchdown passes after going 12-for-20 and throwing 211 yards. He rushed for 25 yards as well.
"I'm proud of the guys, we did our job." head coach Bear Woods said. "Our guys played with heart and showed the payoff from all the conditioning and practice over the summer."
Wetumpka opened the game with a hot start, scoring touchdowns on its first two drives to lead 12-0. sophomore Kaleb Ballard had the first score on a slant route that became a 40-yard foot race. Jordan Hill made his presence felt early with a rushing touchdown early on as well. The sophomore accounted for two touchdowns on the night with 111 yards on 16 carries.
Beauregard rallied to tie things back up, but sophomore kicker Cyrus Bullock drilled a 39-yard field goal to put the Indians in front once again. Wetumpka went into the locker room with a 22-19 lead.
The Indians defense managed to put up the shutout in the second half in part thanks to Walt Myrick. The senior linebacker blocked a punt that what recovered and scored by James Browning. Along with the punt block, Myrick is credited with seven tackles including two for loss.
"[Walt] is a guy who has heart." Coach Woods said. "He's playing offense, defense and special teams with a presence, attitude, effort and relentlessness that you need to have in a leader."
